Canyon County statement about West Valley Humane Society inquiries  https://test110.canyoncounty.id.gov/canyon-county-statement-about-west-valley-humane-society-inquiries/ Thu, 20 Jun 2024 21:19:07 +0000 https://www.canyoncounty.id.gov/?p=48962 Canyon County has received multiple inquiries about an internet post made by the West Valley Humane Society about WVHS’s budgetary woes. The West Valley Humane Society is an independent 501(c)(3) non-profit entity that leases a building for its animal shelter from the County. Canyon County does not have direct oversight over its daily operations.

Canyon County has continually supported WVHS as a community partner and tenant. Most recently, Canyon County completed a roof upgrade to the WVHS building. This project included replacing the previous canvas roof with a wood-framed structure, adding insulation, and installing floor heating within the facility. These enhancements created a controlled temperature environment, facilitating easier temperature regulation to keep the area cool in the summer and warm in the winter, thus significantly benefiting both staff and animals. The County directly paid $850,000 allocated from ARPA. That project is scheduled to be dedicated on Tuesday.

In addition to providing the roof upgrade, the County contributes to the WVHS through a monthly payment made through the County’s lease and service agreement with WVHS that is negotiated annually. WVHS is also financially supported by the cities of Nampa, Caldwell, and Middleton through contractual agreements. The County believes having an independent, non-profit animal shelter is an asset to the citizens of the County and, along with our municipal partners, will review WVHS’s budgetary requests through our annual contract renewal process. Allegations of wrongdoing with WVHS monies should be reported directly to law enforcement and are not a matter the County will comment on.

For more information, please contact the Director of Constituent Services, Aaron Williams at (208) 614-5011.

  • RSVP: By June 20th to BOCC@canyoncounty.id.gov or chad.thompson@canyoncounty.id.gov

Warehouse Expansion: The new warehouse, spanning 12,500 square feet, significantly increases previous storage capacity, nearly tripling the 4,500 square feet of rented space we currently are using. This facility will support various County functions, including the storage of County, Sheriff’s Office, and Emergency Management equipment. With the additional space, the facility can now accommodate vehicles and trailers. Staff is also considering utilizing the space for records storage to meet the growing needs of different departments.

West Valley Humane Society Roof Upgrade: The roof upgrade project at the West Valley Humane Society includes replacing the previous canvas roof with a wood-framed one and adding insulation to the roof. These improvements provide a controlled temperature environment, making it easier to keep the area cool in the summer and warm in the winter, significantly benefiting both staff and animals. The three adoption kennel areas, which were not previously temperature-controlled, will now offer a comfortable environment year-round.

Funding and Project Details: The combined projects were completed on budget, thanks to ARPA funds, with the total projected cost being $3,392,000. The new warehouse was completed at $2,542,000, and the animal shelter roof and kennel enclosure cost $850,000. The warehouse is now complete, and the animal shelter project is targeted for completion by June 12, 2024.

This initiative was led by Beniton Construction and Rick Bugatsch Architecture (RBA).

Please join us for the ribbon-cutting ceremony and enjoy light refreshments as we showcase these enhancements that will serve Canyon County for years to come.

Canyon County Breaks Ground on New Elections Building https://test110.canyoncounty.id.gov/canyon-county-breaks-ground-on-new-elections-building/ Wed, 08 May 2024 18:09:07 +0000 https://www.canyoncounty.id.gov/?p=47767 CANYON COUNTY BREAKS GROUND ON NEW ELECTIONS BUILDING

CALDWELL, ID — The Board of Canyon County Commissioners marked a significant milestone today with the groundbreaking ceremony for the upcoming Canyon County Elections Building, a $4.7 million project that was funded by federal American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) funds.

The ceremony, attended by key stakeholders and community members, heralded the commencement of construction on the 16,500-square-foot facility, slated for completion in late 2024 or early 2025.

The new elections building aims to address the pressing needs of the County’s burgeoning population and provide essential upgrades to the current Elections office.

Canyon County Clerk Rick Hogaboam emphasized the County’s status as the second largest in the state and one of the nation’s fastest-growing communities. He also highlighted the challenges with the current elections facility in accommodating vital functions like in-person training and early voting, which are two areas the new facility should accommodate.

“The right to vote is a constitutional bedrock,” Hogaboam asserted, underlining the pivotal role of secure elections in upholding democratic principles. He expressed gratitude to all those who supported the project, signaling a step forward in safeguarding the electoral process.

Rick Britton, Director of Facilities, underscored the collaborative effort behind the project, acknowledging the backing of Commissioners, the Clerk’s office, and the election staff.

Britton outlined the timeline for construction, anticipating groundbreaking next week and completion by late December or early January. The new facility boasts nearly quadruple the space of the current election’s office and is set to enhance services for voters and streamline election operations.

Commissioner Leslie Van Beek hailed the groundbreaking as a testament to the fruitful partnership between the County Commissioners, the Clerk’s office, and various stakeholders. Recognizing the contributions of individuals and organizations involved, Van Beek lauded the commitment to good governance and citizen welfare exemplified by the new building.

“This is a great day of celebration… It is also a reflection of the functional and collaborative partnership,” Commissioner Van Beek said. “This building embodies the essence of good government. Putting dollars to work for the benefit of the people.”

As the ceremony concluded, Hogaboam expressed gratitude to attendees, recognizing the efforts of the elections team and anticipating enhanced collaboration with other county departments in the new location.

The groundbreaking of the Canyon County Elections Building is a significant step in achieving a modern, efficient elections infrastructure, poised to serve the needs of its growing community.
